MemberNET

Over the years we have had quite a few requests for CSS to provide our members with a way to give directly to Canadian Charities through CSS. We are excited to introduce MemberNet!  A fantastic tool for our members and charity supporters!

MemberNet provides online 24 hour access to CSS Revocable Deposit accounts, Donor Advised Funds and more. Donors can provide gifts directly to the charity of their choice with one time or recurring donations. Registered members can also replenish their CSS account with one time or recurring electronic transfers from their personal bank account. All this from a secure but simple to navigate dashboard.

MemberNet now provides the convenience to give anytime.  Once registered,  donors can make a gift directly to a Canadian Registered Charity of their choice.

Depositing funds to a CSS account, checking your transaction history or sending money directly to a favourite charity has never been so easy or convenient!

MemberNET can be used in so many ways, here are just a few examples:

Ron and Shirley are a busy couple with kids in school, sports, ballet, along with aging parents, and of course work. Every fall they get together to discuss and pray about their giving for the following year. They decide to tithe their combined income of $72,000. Although their local church will receive the lion’s share, they also have three other charities that they wish to support allowing a little margin in the giving budget for unexpected needs. So, starting with a $7,200 giving budget ($600 per month), they decide to give $400/month to church, and $50/month to each of the three charities leaving a $600 budget amount for unexpected needs.

Using their MemberNET account, they are able to;

  1. Set up a monthly Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) of $600 from their personal bank account to their Donor Advised Fund (DAF).
  2. Set up monthly reoccurring donations of $400 to their church, and $50 to each of the other 3 charities from the DAF.
  3. Allow the extra $50 per month to accumulate in their DAF account until they decide to gift some or all of it towards a need. In the meantime, the DAF balance continues to grow.
  4. Oversee and review their giving at any point, making adjustments as needed  They can relax knowing their tithing commitment is in place and is happening without the need to instigate each individual transaction throughout the year.

Herman and Betty are an elderly couple who has $100,000 in an emergency account which also serves as their emergency fund. They want to keep it accessible so it sits in a money market account earning minimal interest. Being retired and on a fixed budget they are also concerned as their giving has declined significantly.

Using their  new MemberNET account, they are able to;

  1. Move their funds to a CSS Revocable Deposit Account (RDA) providing  full access the their funds in case of a need.
  2. Transfer 100% of the higher earnings from the RDA into a Donor Advised Fund creating funds from which to donate.
  3. Receive a donation receipt for the earnings transferred to the DAF account to offset taxes as the funds accumulate to make a meaningful donation down the road.

Fred is a Ginseng farmer. Fred loves the challenge of growing ginseng, but since it takes up to four years to reach maturity, and thus harvested many years after planting, Fred has to survive two or three years without income before he can sell his crop. This also provides some unique challenges for his giving. Fred is well compensated for his efforts and although he wishes to tithe and donate on a more regular bases, he needs his charitable donation receipt in the year he earns his profit.

Using Fred’s MemberNET account he is able to;

  1. Donate a portion of his profit to his MemberNET Donor Advised Fund (DAF) providing him a donation receipt in the year he needs it.
  2. Spread out the lump sum he donated over the lean years, providing regular (annual) installments to his favourite charities rather than large one-time gifts once every three or four years.
  3. Automate the entire process by setting up recurring donations so his gifts will go out on a timely basis.

Janet has been a teacher for 25 years, which means she earns a great wage and she doesn’t worry about her retirement as her teacher’s pension will certainly meet her needs. Janet never got married, her house is paid off, and she lives comfortably. Janet also has a big heart for various charities in her community and abroad which prompts her to donate a good part of her income as she is led to do so. Administration however is not a skill set she was blessed with and so keeping track of who and what she has supported along the way, and gathering the receipts at tax time creates a great deal of stress for her. Janet’s generosity has also resulted in a few missteps where she unfortunately learned after the fact that the exciting new charity was in fact a scam.

Using her MemberNET account Janet is able to;

  1. Rediscover the joy of giving.
  2. Set up a monthly deposit to her MemberNET Donor Advised Fund (DAF) to fund her giving. She can also top up her account with one time deposits as needed.
  3. Receives a single tax receipt from CSS for all her donations during the year eliminating the need to track down charitable receipts from the individual charities she has supported throughout the tax year.
  4. Give confidently to any charitable organization in Canada knowing that only charities in good standing with the CRA are listed as possible recipients of her generosity from MemberNET.
  5. Remain in control of her giving and allow her to concentrate on blessing her favourite charities with the support they need.

Dave and Jeanette have spent their entire married life growing their manufacturing business, but it time now to retire. A buyer has stepped forward, and a price was agreed upon. Although Dave and Jeanette always supported a number of causes as they were able, the business always seemed to gobble up a significant part of the profits with expansions, new machinery and extra staffing. Now they had an opportunity to make a significant contribution to Kingdom work, and the bonus was that this would offset a good portion of the taxes that needed to be paid during this transition. Dave and Jeanette envisioned setting up a foundation with the funds diverted to charity, however the cost and administrative burden seemed a lot to carry.

Deciding on a MemberNET account, they are able to;

  1. Deposit funds into a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) with the which will provide them with a donation tax receipt to offset the tax bill.
  2. Enjoy almost all the benefits of a foundation without all the complexities of running a foundation such as the need to have of a board of trustees or submitting the required tax reporting.
  3. Give as they feel led and enjoy the process of donating to their favourite charities with no further receipt tracking required.
  4. Review their giving at any time online
  5. Earn a good return on any balance in the DAF which they can also distribute to charity.

Susan is the sole proprietor of a retail store. Susan loves her work, but puts in many long hours to source inventory, hire, train and schedule staff, as well as dealing with the unexpected emergencies that seem to crop up from time to time. The store does very well in several seasons during the year however other times sales can be slow. Although the store profits are well above $150,000 per year, cash flow management caused by the ebb and flow of sales creates an uneven income stream for Susan.   Susan has a generous heart and her intention each year is to tithe is not always realized as the extra effort to manage her giving along with all her other responsibilities has often led to much less actual giving than what she intended.

Turning to her new MemberNET account Susan is now able to;

  1. Set up an EFT to send funds to her Donor Advised Funds (DAF) account with regularity.
  2. Set up recurring donations to charities from the DAF.
  3. Go online to perform transfers and donations at any time of day or night as time allows outside of business hours.
  4. Simplify the giving process with no needs to write cheques, find addresses to charities, rely on the postal system.
  5. Relax knowing the administration tied to her giving is all in place.

Raymond and Alice are well into their 80’s and still live in the house where they raised their five children. They are now at an age where their daughter who lives close by takes care of most of their financial affairs as their Power of Attorney. Over their life time they have always made it a priority to support a number of charities and would like to continue this for as long as possible. Raymond and Alice have instilled this same discipline in their children  and so at one of their family gatherings it was suggested that they collectively support a few agreed upon charities as a family unit. The question is how?

Using MemberNET they realize that;

  1. The Donor Advised Fund (DAF) can simulate the giving activities of a foundation without any of the legal, governance or reporting requirements.
  2. Create a giving environment where the parents can continue to provide charitable funds beyond their earthly life, but allow all their children to continue to participate.
  3. Much like a formal foundation, the family is able to decide where to make their annual donations in perhaps a “grant making” meeting style. From there an authorized family member will be able to go online to disburse (make the donations) from the DAF account complete with installments and designations as needed.
  4. Benefit from the fact that this fund does not have to adhere to the 3.5% disbursement quota applied to public and private foundations.  Any amount can be donated from the foundation on an annual amount (either above or below the disbursement quota).

Tony and Sandy are a working couple with high school age children. They have been active members of their local church for as long as they have been married, and the church is expanding. They were approached by the leadership about making a gift to the capital campaign which would be above their regular tithing. After some discussion and prayer, they felt led to pledge $10,000 however didn’t think they could manage that in one lump sum. The church pamphlet provided options to spread the gift over a number of years so Tony and Sandy opted to provide a $2,000 gift per year for five years.

Using their MemberNET account they are able to;

  1. Manage their annual installments of their pledge as well.
  2. Increase their monthly  EFT transfer to their MemberNET account to ‘save up’ for the annual pledge installments when they come due.
  3. Further set up the payment date for annual pledge amount ahead of time so they don’t forget, avoiding any uncomfortable phone calls from the church to follow up on pledge amounts.
  4. Relax! Using MemberNET gives Tony and Sandy peace of mind! … and makes giving easier!
